"The best Linux distribution we've come across. Slackware's setup program made it simple to install." - PC Week, April 1994

The Official Slackware Linux is the perfect choice for a high performance 32-bit multiuser operating system. Linux, developed by Linux Torvalds and hundreds of volunteers on the Internet, is a clone of Unix. It turns your machine into a multitasking workstation with a full range of software development, text editing, and image processing tools. You even get the popular DOOM arcade game from id software. What's more, you'll be able to connect your machine to the Internet and use electronic mail or news (with a supported ethernet card, or with SLIP/PPP using a modem).

This two CDROM set was created by the author of Slackware. You get complete source code and compilers. The first CDROM contains the Linux system (kernel 1.1.94) and source code, and the second contains archives from popular Linux Internet ftp sites.

Slackware Linux requires 4 MB of memory (8 recommended), and at least 12 MB of hard disk space to run in CDROM dependent mode. You don't need to repartition your hard disk -you can install Slackware on a MSDOS partition! For better performance, install Linux to the hard drive using anywhere from 40 to 250 MB. A typical installation with C and C++ (v. 2.6.3) development tools, emacs (v. 19.28) networking with e-mail and news (bsd sendmail 8.6.10), the XFree86 X Window System (v. 3.1.1), and several applications needs around 40 MB.

Slackware Linux is compatible with most standard Intel PC hardware, from 386 to PCI/Pentium motherboards. It supports most CDROM drives, sound, ethernet cards, and mice.

Walnut Creek CDROM has hosted the Slackware Linux project on the Internet since 1993. Since then, Linux has grown to become one of the most powerful operating systems available. Get the most out of your computer! Join thousands of other users around the world who have found a better way to compute.

Das offizielle Release von Patrick Volkerding

Linux Slackware 96

4 CDROMs!

-Info World

The Official Release By Patrick Volkerding

Linux Slackware 4.0

"Slackware is heavy-duty enough for mid-size businesses and departments but user-friendly enough for home users." - Info World

Official Slackware Linux turns your machine into a powerful 32-bit multi-tasking workstation. Linux is a UNIX clone, developed by Linux Torvalds and hundreds of volunteers on the Internet.

Develop programs with a full range of software development, text editing, & image processing tools. Play popular games. Connect your machine to the Internet and set up a WWW site, use electronic mail, and read netnews.

Patrick Volkerding, the maintainer of Slackware, authored this 4-disc CDROM set. The first CDROM contains the easy to install Linux system (kernel 2.2.6), full source code, and a live Linux file system. The second CDROM contains Linux archives and a fully installed, ready-to-run Linux system. Just pop the disc into any bootable CDROM drive and you can test-drive Linux on your machine (including the X Windows System) in seconds! The third and fourth CDROMs contain software carefully selected from the best Internet Linux archive sites.

Official Slackware Linux requires 8 MB of memory, 25 MB of hard disk space (for a CDROM dependent installation), and a 3.5'' floppy disk or bootable CDROM drive. For better performance, install Slackware Linux to your hard disk using 40 to 700 MB. A basic installation with C/C++, development tools, networking, the X Window System (v 3.3.3.1), and several applications uses 250 MB. For a full installation, a 700 MB (or larger) partition is recommended.

A full installation includes teTeX TeX, GNU C/C++/Objective-C (egcs-1.1.2, gcc-2.7.2.3, and gcc-2.8.1), GNU Fortran-77 (v. 0.5.24), Tcl (v. 8.0.5), Tk (v. 8.0.5), TclX (v. 8.0.4), make, byacc and GNU bison, flex, the 5.4.46 C libraries (and a beta version of the experimental glibc libraries), gdb, GNU common LISP (v. 2.2.2), p2c (Pascal to C), m4, perl (v. 5.005_03), rcs, emacs (v. 20.3), TCP/IP networking, SLIP/PPP, IP accounting and firewalls, Java SDK, BSD sendmail (v. 8.9.3), inn, cnews, nn, tin, trn, fvwm95, XF86Setup, ghostscript, xv (v. 3.10a), GNU chess, TkDesk (v. 1.0), gnuplot, xfractint, the Apache HTTP (WWW) server (v. 1.3.6), the KDE graphical user interface (v. 1.1), Lynx (v. 2.8.1), and Netscape Communicator (v. 4.57).

Official Slackware Linux is compatible with most PC hardware & supports most CDROM drives, sound, ethernet, and mice. The advanced 2.2.6 kernel will provide stellar performance on high-end systems, including support for symmetric multi-processing (up to 16 processors), PCI, and special code optimizations for the 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, Pentium II, and Pentium III (including Xeon).
